Tile floors typically use grout because it keeps the substrate moisture-free and straight lines, preventing tiles from crowding each other and cracking. Remember that while tiles are generally waterproof, the joints are not. Liquid can seep through to the subfloor; grout seals them.

Grout lines also play a significant part in "grip" because ceramics can be slippery when wet, and the grout lines help add texture. That is one of the reasons for the trend to use mosaics (the tiny, often 1 X 1 highly decorated and pebble-like pieces) in bathrooms.

What is grout?

It's a combination of cement, water, and color. Once considered only for its functional abilities, it now comes in an extensive color palette and is regarded as an essential design tool. Some use colors to blend or create contrast with the tiles.

There are three main types of grout. Unsanded grout is when grout joints are less than ⅛-inch wide, while sand is used when the joints are greater than ⅛-inch wide. Epoxy is usually for more challenging installations.

How to clean grout

Prevention is always better than cure, and since grout is porous, it's prone to staining; clean regularly so dirt and stains don't embed. Start with the mildest solution, which is warm water and a stiff-bristled brush. If that doesn't work, spray a solution of equal parts vinegar and water and let it sit for five minutes.

If stains are stubborn, make a paste of baking soda and water, apply it and spray with the vinegar solution; when everything stops foaming, scrub and rinse. If needed, you can also use an oxygen bleach (such as OxiClean) and leave it for 15 minutes before rinsing.
