Medallions: Think of them as tile flooring art

With all the newest technology, as well as the virtually unlimited number of colors, patterns, shapes, and sizes, it's easy to make your tile floors special. One way is the creation of a medallion.

What is it?

A floor medallion is a centerpiece of the design.  It can be made from numerous materials, but often with tile, and is usually set off with a border. While you can include them in kitchen and bath floors, keep in mind that that tile is versatile enough to be used in most areas, from hallways and dens to living rooms. Stone tile is a popular choice, and you can get them here.  If budget’s a concern, remember that both ceramic and porcelain can be made to look like anything, including marble, granite or travertine.

Ask your tile flooring retailer to tell you more.

What is Waterjet technology?

It is a relatively new printing process that, just as the name implies, uses a powerful surge of water to cut through hard surfaces like tile, glass metal, etc. Previously, cutting could only be done by saws. With this technology, intricate patterns can be achieved, such as a Mother of Pearl, geometric, mosaic designs, etc.

Other ways to turn your floor into art

Glass tile adds glamour to any atmosphere, whether in the kitchen, bath, foyer, or living room. These are made from recycled glass which is melted and then handcrafted into various shapes. They have a reflective, artisan-like quality and are also durable, waterproof, and mold resistant. Glass tile is easy to clean and because it has low porosity, it is stain resistant. Think about adding them as accents either to your medallion or overall floor.

Another way is to combine two trends:  metallics and stone, by installing copper-colored slate floors for that upscale look. Don’t hide it, but install the floors in highly visible places, like large kitchens. Don’t forget about wood; it’s currently popular and that’s expected to last a long time. Both ceramic and porcelain can be made to look like wood. The good news is that it’s waterproof, so you can install it in high-moisture places where genuine wood cannot go.
