Choosing new hardwood flooring for your home is an exciting prospect. You picture warm tones, graceful grain patterns, and a clean space that feels fresh again. But once you fall in love with the look, the next question usually comes fast. How long does a hardwood flooring installation actually take? At Floor Specialists, our team hears this question frequently. Homeowners want clarity before they commit, and we completely understand.

Let us walk you through the full timeline so you know exactly what to expect.

What affects your hardwood floor installation timeline

Hardwood floor installation is not a one-size-fits-all process. Some projects are completed quickly, while others require more time. The length depends on a few core factors.

The size of your project: Bigger spaces take longer. A single bedroom may be a one or two-day job. A full first floor can take several days to complete. If your layout has many angles, closets, hallways, and stairs, expect a longer schedule.

The type of hardwood you choose: Solid hardwood and engineered hardwood install differently. Solid hardwood often needs more prep, more acclimation, and sometimes additional sanding or finishing. Engineered hardwood installs faster in most cases.

The condition of your subfloor: A smooth, level subfloor keeps things moving quickly. If the subfloor has dips, cracks, squeaks, or moisture problems, your hardwood flooring installation team may need time to repair it first. This part is essential because the quality of your subfloor affects the look and lifespan of your hardwood.

The installation method: Nail down, staple down, glue down, or floating installations all have different timelines. Glue-down floors take more time because the adhesive needs to be applied carefully. Floating floors tend to be faster.

Extra custom details: Transitions, trims, borders, or patterns add beauty, but also add hours. Many homeowners love custom touches, and we enjoy installing them. Just remember that creative elements require more hands-on time.

How long does hardwood flooring acclimation take?

Acclimation is a step many homeowners do not know about. Hardwood flooring needs time to adjust to the temperature and humidity inside your home before it can be installed. This prevents issues like cupping or gapping later.

Typical acclimation time is one to three days for engineered hardwood and three to seven days for solid hardwood. Florida’s humidity can play a role. At Floor Specialists, we check your home’s conditions and the manufacturer’s guidelines so your floors settle safely and correctly.

The hardwood floor installation process

Once your hardwood flooring is acclimated, the real transformation begins. Here is what the day-to-day process usually looks like.

Day 1: Preparation

The team removes old flooring, cleans the area, and inspects the subfloor. If repairs are needed, this may continue into day two. We always communicate this upfront, so nothing comes as a surprise.

Day 2 to Day 4: Laying the hardwood floors

This part varies based on square footage. Your installers measure, cut, place, and secure each board. It is detailed work. Corners and tight spaces take more time. Open areas move faster.

If you choose glue-down installation, the team may work in sections so the adhesive cures properly. If you choose nail-down installation, progress can move quickly across large rooms.

Day 4 to Day 6: Finishing touches

This includes trimming, transitions, baseboards, and a full cleanup. If your hardwood needs sanding and staining, this adds several days. Prefinished hardwood is faster since the finishing work is already done in the factory.

For most homes, a typical hardwood floor installation takes three to seven days from start to finish, not including acclimation.

When your hardwood flooring installation project may take longer

Some homes need more than a standard approach. Here are a few situations that may extend your timeline.

You have tile or glued flooring that takes extra time to remove.

Your home has high moisture levels and needs a moisture barrier.

You selected custom inlays, borders, or patterns.

You plan to refinish existing hardwood and install new hardwood together.

Your subfloor needs leveling, patching, or structural repair.

Our team handles all of these situations with patience and care. We prefer to do the job right instead of rushing through it. A little extra time often protects your investment for decades.

How to prepare your home for a smooth hardwood floor installation

You can help speed things up by preparing your space ahead of time. Small steps make a big difference.

Move furniture out of the rooms being installed.

Remove fragile decor or wall items.

Prepare a space for your pets during installation.

Clear pathways so crews can bring in materials and tools.

Discuss any layout or design questions before installation day.

Good communication keeps your timeline on track. At Floor Specialists, our installers and design team stay in close contact with you from the moment the project begins.
